General Music Courses
Computer Music I
This course will encompass the use of technology in today’s world of music. Students will study and experience industry standards of computer software capabilities, sequencers, MIDI keyboards, and synthesized sounds. A previous musical background is not necessary to use these contemporary techniques to compose and produce quality recordings.
Prerequisite: None
This course addresses the following expectations for student learning: appropriate use of technology, demonstration of effective listening skills, critical thinking skills, and problem solving skills.
Computer Music II
This course is a continuation of the study of musical sequencing and composition from the Computer Music 1 course. Students in this course will use more advanced techniques and software to create their compositions and recordings.
Prerequisite: Computer Music 1
This course addresses the following expectations for student learning: appropriate use of technology, demonstration of effective listening skills, critical thinking skills, and problem solving skills.
Jazz Lab
This course will offer instruction in the development and refinement of performance and ensemble techniques in the jazz styles. This course is designed for members of the music department who have a working knowledge music through the playing of an instrument/voice. Elements of jazz theory, improvisation, and interpretation will be studied in big band and small ensemble settings.
Prerequisite: Open to members of the music department or with instructor’s approval.

The Music In America course is designed to provide an education in the history of American music, including jazz, rock, rap, and hip-hop music through the analyses of recordings and videos, handouts, assignments, and projects. Students will also explore the political, social, and cultural shaping of these major musical movements.

Music Theory
The Music In America course is designed to provide an education in the history of American music, including jazz, rock, rap, and hip-hop music through the analyses of recordings and videos, handouts, assignments, and projects. Students will also explore the political, social, and cultural shaping of these major musical movements.

Students will explore basic composition and arranging skills including harmonic theory, scale and mode construction, interval recognition, chord construction, and arranging for a small ensemble. Ear training concepts will be stressed. Students selecting this course should have a working knowledge of music through the playing of an instrument/voice. Students will be assessed based upon a portfolio of musical compositions.
