Symphonic Band Auditions
Mt. Hood Community College
Auditions for the Mt. Hood CC Symphonic Band will take place during the first week of Fall Term. Members do not need to reaudition at the start of each term unless there is a new seat to be filled. Please contact Dan Davey, the Director, at [email protected] with any questions.
Audition Requirements:
Auditions will be held individually and will be in three (3) parts, which are described below.
Part 1 - Scales
Be prepared to play major and minor scales in eighth notes ascending and descending two octaves, maintaining an open and focused tone through all registers of your instrument. Play scales with a legato articulation.
Part 2 – Literature (lyrical)
Perform an appropriate selection of your choosing that displays your ability to play in a smooth and lyrical style. This selection should display contrasts in dynamics as well as your ability to play legato passages.
Percussionists should perform this on a mallet instrument.
Part 3 – Literature (technical)
Perform an appropriate selection of your choosing that displays your ability to play technically demanding literature and your ability to apply proper technique to this style of music.
Percussionists may choose a multiple percussion piece or perform this on snare drum.
Range Check - Play your “C” scale starting on the low C and going as high as you are capable (horns only).
Sight-Reading - Candidates will be asked to sight read,
